Nita Bowerman is a multidisciplinary performance-based artist. Trained as an actor and dancer, Nita is also a prolific creator of short experimental movement-based videos which can be viewed at moveandtell.com and on Instagram. In 2017 she had videos screened in Vancouver and Toronto, Canada, and in Chicago, USA. Nita typically uses ubiquitous technologies (smart phone and iOS apps) to make digital art works. She received a BC Arts Council grant to study with Sammy Chien to learn how to integrate live video manipulation and projection into performance using Isadora software. She immediate conceived, created and performed a live media performance piece using Isadora as the primary design inspiration (Interplay). Nita has worked as a performer and designer with several Vancouver based independent theatre companies, including The Only Animal, Alley Theatre and Leaky Heaven Circus. She has conceived and created several intimate theatre works, includingwreckage, a play under a dock in collaboration with a scuba diver (Vancouver Fringe Festival, Fringe Onsite) and did you see others like me?, a play in a pitch black stairwell for one audience member at a time (BC Buds). Nita also makes wearable art works from unconventional materials, such as egg cartons, chicken wire, plastic and sailcloth. Her costume design for Alley Theatre’s Mrs Warren’s Profession was nominated for a Jessie Richardson Theatre Award and she has received several awards for her unconventional wearables. Nita has taught acting, dance and digital art classes with multiple organizations, most notably in affiliation with Canadian Mental Health Association and at BC Housing sites through Ptarmigan Society. In August 2018, Nita will travel to Cartagena, Colombia to lecture at Fifth International Week, Cartagena Internacional.Working in Vancouver, BC, Nita is a graduate of Simon Fraser University School for Contemporary Arts.
